Mistakes and Missteps

When we first laid out the building plans, I wondered if this was going to be possible. The plans were confusing. After the initial stress of trying to make sense of the confusing lines and numbers, I worked with my Dad to make sense of the design. Piece by piece, the lines became a hull, the numbers became dimensions. Throughout the building we ran into several problems but it wasn’t until today that I was confronted with physical injury. This is my right big toe after #3 plank slipped from the work bench and landed on my favorite toe....I will take the rest of the day off.

Combining Scarf Joints

Because mahogany mahogany can only be cut in specific lengths, several pieces must be mended together in joints called “scarf joints”. You can see the scarf joint where we mended two pieces together with epoxy resin. The stitching process is requires time but is generally easy to accomplish. The stitching process is a one man job. The planks are joined by twisting copper wire stitches together .

Finishing the Epoxy

The epoxy on the outside of has finished drying. Our next step is to apply it to the inside of the boat. The winter was slow to make any improvements and make steps towards completion as this was one of our first big leaps of the spring.
