Bringing History to Life

Why Build a Boat?

The COVID- 19 crisis came on suddenly. As our country confronted the pandemic, our school debated how to manage the crisis.

I became a virtual student and overnight, my life changed. I am Eric Genden, Jr. I am a Junior at the Bronxville High School. I enjoy history, in particular, American history. Faced with weekdays in virtual class and weekends unable to see my friends, my Dad and I decided to learn a new skill, boat building.

I chose to merge my interest in history with this new adventure and choose to build a boat that I saw appear throughout early American history, the lapstrake sail boat.

We decided to build a boat that was used by Henry Hudson to explore the shores of the river that now bears his name. Our goal is to sail and row our boat along the shores of the Hudson
River as Henry Hudson did more than 400 years ago. This is a journal of our experience.
