The Beginning

The build begins with long sections of Okoume mahogany. Okoume, also known as gaboon, is a type of wood only found in Gabon, the Congo and Equatorial Guinea ion Africa. This wood is ideal for boat building because it is lightweight, strong, and available.

The planks of wood are laid out and using the plans, they are set side by side to begin the “stitching” process. In this type of boat design, the planks of wood are initially stitched together using copper wire. Later the planks will be glued together with epoxy resin and the stitches will be removed.
